In recent years, increasing international migration and the heightened desire to migrate have emerged as major challenges in policymaking, especially in developing countries. Iran has also been known as a migrant-sending country for decades. An examination of the country's net migration trend also shows that the country's migration balance has always been negative in the last two decades. In this regard, this study seeks to address two key questions: 1) What is the status of young people's desire toward international migration in Iran? 2) What are the main causes and factors influencing the desire to migrate from Iran? The study employs a secondary analysis of data derived from the National Survey of Values and Attitudes of Iranian Youth (2020). The data were collected through a nationwide survey encompassing Iranian citizens aged 18 to 35. The calculated sample size for this survey, was 11,364 individuals. The findings show that about half of the respondents (45.5%) have a desire to migrate from Iran and live in another country. The findings show that the tendency to migrate is a function of demographic characteristics such as being single, childless, active employment status, university education, and residence in large cities. Results from the multivariate regression analysis indicate that a set of factors -including education, household expenditure level, life satisfaction, hope for the future, perceived social and economic security, lifestyle patterns, and sense of national belonging- jointly account for about 49% of the variance in migration intention. Overall, the results indicate that the desire to migrate among young people is a multidimensional phenomenon that cannot be explained solely by economic factors. Accordingly, any effective policy response must adopt a comprehensive approach addressing economic, social, and cultural dimensions. Strengthening hope for the future, expanding employment opportunities, enhancing perceptions of social and economic security, and fostering a stronger sense of national belonging are crucial for mitigating migration tendencies among the younger generation.
