The reduction of the gender gap in deviant behaviors has recently attracted a lot of attention. Therefore, the current article aims to test the validity of Braithwaite's assertion that this theory is not gender neutral and its potential to be generalized to both genders.
The present study is divided into two sections. First, the library method was employed to analyze the theoretical issues; second, the survey technique was employed to evaluate the results. The multi-stage cluster sampling method was employed to gather the questionnaire from 831 students at five public universities in Tehran. The method involved clustering universities based on majors, selecting universities based on the number of students, and selecting universities based on gender.
The regression coefficients of independent variables and students’ deviant behavior for both sexes indicate that the regression model of girls encompassed only four variables: adherence to moral values, deviant friends, stigmatization, and shame displacement. These variables were capable of accounting for 39% of the variance in the variable of girls’ deviant behavior. Additionally, the linear regression model of males has been supplemented with five variables: shame internalization, deviant friends, stigmatization, reintegration, and adherence to moral values. These variables have the capacity to explain 40% of the variance in their deviant behavior.
In general, reintegrative shaming theory has the ability to generalize to the deviant behaviors of female students. Braithwaite’s assertion regarding the theory’s ability to generalize gender was not an ambitious assumption, and the theory has the capacity to generalize to both sexes.
