Greenwashing as a Contemporary Social Issue: A Sociological Analysis Using the Grey DEMATEL Technique
Greenwashing is emerging as a significant contemporary social issue in the context of industry and corporate behavior. It can be described as a form of corporate hypocrisy and the deliberate dissemination of misleading information aimed at deceiving citizens. In other words, it involves exploiting environmental concerns as a pretext to achieve economic profit. The aim of this study is to conduct a sociological analysis of the relationship between greenwashing and various social factors using the Grey Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (Grey DEMATEL) method. The statistical population of this research includes faculty members from the faculties of Economics, Management, and Social Sciences at Shiraz University. A purposive sampling method was employed, and the sample size was determined to be 12 individuals. Data were collected using both library research and structured questionnaires.
The analysis, carried out using the Grey DEMATEL technique, revealed that the variables of social stress, social isolation, perceived social insecurity, and reduced social participation had the greatest impact on greenwashing. On the other hand, the variables most affected by greenwashing were social distrust, physical and psychological health risks, environmental risks, and the decline of organizational creativity. Furthermore, in terms of importance, the most significant variables were: social distrust (6.52), physical and psychological health risks (6.38), environmental risks (6.12), reduced organizational creativity (5.97), and decreased social participation (5.80).
These findings suggest a complex web of interactions in which greenwashing is both a cause and consequence of broader social and environmental vulnerabilities.
