The aim of this study is to explore the effect of problematic life domains on academic dishonesty among university students in Tehran, Iran. It utilizes an analytical correlational approach conducting a new survey. The population under study comprises all students of the University of Tehran during the academic year of 2024-2025. Through multi-stage cluster sampling, a sample of 358 individuals (167 female and 191 male students) is selected. Research hypotheses were analyzed using statistical tests such as correlation coefficients, multiple and hierarchical regression (SPSS software version 27), and structural equation modeling (Amos software version 24). The findings indicate that problematic life domains (including personal, family, peer, and academic), motivations for and deterrents against academic dishonesty, as well as demographic variables collectively account for 48 percent of variance of the outcome variable. Furthermore, the results show that the problematic life domains explained 23 percent of variance in deterrence against academic dishonesty and 26 percent of variance in motivation for academic dishonesty. Consistent with the literature, significant gender differences in academic dishonesty were also observed, with male students exhibiting higher levels of cheating compared to their female counterparts. These findings, show that living in harmful conditions in different domains, through weakening social ties, reducing personal control, and increasing contact with deviant peers, can lead to increased motivation and reduced inhibition against unethical actions. The innovation of this research is in the simultaneous integration of individual, family, collective, and institutional dimensions in explaining academic dishonesty; which highlights the necessity of multi-level interventions in the field of preventing scientific fraud in universities.
