Abstract

The question of the position of the Institute of Social Studies and Research, which started working in the 1940s under the Faculty of Literature of the University of Tehran, is a fundamental question in Iran's academic sociology, because the answer to it is not only possible to distinguish the currents of Iranian sociology. Rather, it is possible to recognize the roots and signs of the weakness and suffering of Iranian social sciences. In response to this question, most of the analysts have focused on the historiography of academic sociology in Iran, and that is disproportionate to the materials and materials of this history, because as we have shown, they focus more on the possibility or refusal of social sciences in Iran, and not on society. Academic studies of Iran. In this article, using the method of critical history and document study, we show that the analysis of this position is not possible except through the understanding of the social field in which the institution was formed, and we will see that this academic institution emerged from the heart of Iran's social questions and needs. And the steps taken on the way to the birth of sociology in Iran have been in search of answers to these questions and necessities. On the other hand, the sociological view ruling the institution was contrary to the ruling current of the intellectuals of the time, and by adhering to its sociological principles, the institution still maintained its clear boundaries with non-academic currents such as the leftist discourse.
